Biography

Observation and drawing are the foundation of my work. I have enjoyed decades of study and practice, working to develop an understanding of horses that is both physical and metaphysical. I pull from that knowledge when I simplify, twist, turn and exaggerate the horse form to better express who they are.

When I feel that an image I’ve made expresses the complete horse – form and spirit, mass and energy – then I have achieved my goal, to communicate my sense of the essential nature of my subject.

All of my work is built from memory and imagination, and some of these paintings are pure invention. Many others are commissioned by people who share my love of horses, and would like to have my interpretation of their special equine.

I feel fortunate to live my life surrounded by horses. They inspire, humble and often awe me with their beauty, bigger than life presence and their gentle nature…I never tire of watching them.
